Our
Curriculum
At SHCDC, your child will participate in a variety of age-appropriate activities that foster social, intellectual, and spiritual growth. We will engage your child by encouraging:
Immersion in stories, poetry, dramatizations, puppetry, and books
Positive interaction with teachers and other children
Learning to respond to, listen to, and sing different types of music
Creative Exploration
Using play equipment to aid in physical development
Engaging in play with manipulative materials such as paints, clay, crayons, scissors, glue, puzzles, and other crafts
We recognize that every child learns and develops in different ways and at different paces. All of our classes use Creative Curriculum by Teaching Strategies, reflecting the philosophy that children learn best by doing. Creative Curriculum emphasizes the process of learning – "Teaching children how to learn is more important than teaching children what to learn."
To strengthen your child's self-concept and understanding of their surroundings, daily activities include:
Respecting other children’s rights and earning respect of other children
Developing an understanding that each person is special and has worth
Solving problems in everyday life
Working as an individual
Our curriculum identifies goals in 8 areas of development and learning:
Literacy
Mathematics
Social Studies
The Arts
Social-Emotional
Physical
Language
Cognitive
We encourage children to become active thinkers and explorers by selecting topics that are age-appropriate, draw upon their interests, and relate to their daily lives. These educational experiences give your child the best possible start in elementary school, and help them develop a life-long love of learning.
